Rules

Facilities
  • The League rents facilities from the City as well as private facilities in order to provide our leagues. Please respect the facilities so we can continue using them.  If we lose our permit for any reason then the season is over.
  • LEAVE THE COURT THE WAY YOU FOUND IT
If you do not adhere to the above rules then you will be asked to leave the court

Rosters
  • 4's - 4 players on the court at one time – at least one must be female
  • 6's - 6 players on the court at one time - atleast two must be female
  • The League recommends teams of 5-6 for 4's and 7 -8 for 6's to avoid defaulting and for subs.
  • A minimum of 3 players must be present to start a game in 4's format. 1 must be female
  • A minimum of 4 players must be present to start a game in 4's format. 2 must be female
  • If the minimum requirement isn’t met the team that is short will lose by default 2-0
  • Teams are encouraged to arrive at the court 10 minutes before the posted game time
  • A game that starts late will be a short game. Games must end on time. NO EXCEPTIONS

Defaults
  • If the minimum requirement isn’t met the beach volleyball team that is short will lose by default 2-0
  • If a team is not ready 10 minutes after the posted game time they will lose by default 2-0. We recommend the game be played regardless if possible.
  • If a team defaults one game then they will be required to pay a default fee by e transfer before their next game. If this is not paid then all games will be updated as a default loss and the team will not be scheduled anymore games.
  • If a team misses two games then another default fee will need to be paid in order to have any future games scheduled. A meeting with the league will occur to determine if this league is the right fit for your team. If a second default fee is not paid then the players on the roster will not be allowed to play in any future sports.
  • If a team misses more than two games then this is not the right league for your team. You need a drop in league and the players on the roster will not be allowed to play in any future sports.
  • If both captains agree, the minimum requirement rule can be waived and the game will count towards the standings. This must be decided upon before the start of the game and teams cannot change their minds once the game has started.

Objectionable Behaviour

Reckless, aggressive, threatening or unsportsmanlike behaviour will result in being ejected from the game. If this behaviour is repeated, the player may face ejection from The League. If this is a team wide issue, the team may be ejected from The League

Zero Tolerance Policy

Rec League staff reserve the right to remove players immediately from any facility or league if they are involved with any of the following acts:
  • Using racial, ethnic, homophobic, fatphobic, gendered, transphobic, sexist, sexual, disability or other slurs
  • Instigating or retaliating in an altercation
  • Intentionally pushing, shoving, or making physical contact
  • Displaying disrespectful or threatening behavior
  • Swearing at another person
If a player is removed for any reason, they must vacate the facility immediately, including the parking lot.

Officiating
  • All Leagues are self officiated.
  • Captains are responsible to ensure that games start and end on time.
  • Team captains should assign someone to be in charge of keeping time and they should let everyone know when there is five minutes remaining in each half.
  • If a game starts late, it does not run late. Games are scheduled back to back, so games must end on time.
  • Team and players must make their own calls.
  • Teams should not be making calls on the other team, but if necessary please do so in a polite and respectful manner.

Captains are responsible for their teammates and their actions. Captains must ensure the rules are followed and that their players understand the rules and sportsmanship expectations of The League.

Game Play
  • Games will be played to 21 and teams must win by two points - the third game of the best of three will be played to 15.
  • Players rotate clockwise prior to their team's serve.
  • A player may not hit the ball more than once in succession.
  • No more than three touches may be made per team before the ball is returned over the net
  • A block at the net does not count as a touch
  • A block on a serve is illegal
  • The ball must be hit legally - no holding, carrying, lifting or throwing
  • A player cannot touch, reach over, or under the net to hit the ball
  • Only when returning the ball may a player follow through over the net

Boundaries
  • Games are played within the regular volleyball court lines.
  • The ball is considered "IN" if it strikes part of the court lines
  • A player may step on the centre line, but may not step across the centre line.

Service
  • A serve may be over hand or under hand, as long as it is done so legally
  • Once a team has scored 5 points with the same server they must rotate one position. The team remains serving but a new server comes in from rotating.

Scoring

Rally Point scoring - using this scoring system, a point is scored during any stoppage in play, unless it is a re-service. This means any team can score a point, whether they are serving or not.

Points are awarded to the opposite team when:
  • The ball touches the ground
  • A team has played the ball more than three times consecutively
  • The ball is held or pushed
  • The ball touches obstructions - such as basketball nets or ceiling
  • A player touches the ball twice consecutively
  • A player touches the net or a vertical marker on the antenna
  • A player contacts the ball above the opponent's court
  • A back line player, while in the attack area hits the ball into the opponent's court from above the height of the net
  • The ball lands outside or touches an object outside the lines of the court
  • The game is delayed persistently (taking longer than five seconds to serve)
  • The players wave arms, jump or form groups of two or more, the purpose of which is to form a screen to conceal the server's actions
  • The served ball crosses the net with the help of a teammate
  • A service is blocked

Playoffs
  • All teams will get two playoff games, regardless of where they finish in the standings or the score of their first playoff game
  • A tie in the playoffs will be played by a sudden death game.
  • Once there is less than 10 minutes left a new game should not be started. If the game does not finish in the allotted time then the game is over and the score will stand as is. For example, if time runs out and a game has a score of 7-5 then the team with 7 will win.

Alcohol Consumption
  • The League and the City does not allow any open alcohol at any public venue.
  • Any player or team found to be under the influence of alcohol, or other controlled substance, will be automatically ejected from The League wihtout refund.
  • Any and all fines will be the responsibility of the teams. Teams will lose every scheduled game and will not be scheduled any other games until all fines are paid.

Weather
  • Games are on rain or shine, unless there is standing water on the courts. Games will be played in all weather.

 Rescheduling

  • The Rec League will not reschedule games for any reason  Should you cancel your game you will lose by default.

Sportsmanship

This is a Rec League and we expect all players and teams to have a fun first attitude. To help enforce this style of play we ask all teams to report the sportsmanship rating of the opposing team after every game.

2 – Good, fun spirited team, respected their opposition and made the game enjoyable
1 – Was not unsportsmanlike, but didn’t go out of their way to make the game enjoyable.
0 – Was not a fun team to play. They made the game less enjoyable and did not respect the opposition

If a team gets two 0 ratings in one season The League will decide whether the team is fit for this league and may remove them from the schedule.

Scores
  • Captains are responsible for sending scores and sportsmanship rating within 24 hours of games
  • Captains should confirm each other’s scores throughout the game.
  • If scores are not reported then they will not count towards the standings
  • Not reporting score will have a negative impact on your teams sportsmanship rating and standing in The League.
Scores should be emailed to scores@saskatoonrecleague.com

Registration fees are fully refundable, minus a $20 administration charge, up to 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the season. After this, The League assumes you have committed and all fees are non-refundable. We require this time frame in order to create teams and to complete scheduling.
